On Screen
THE UNBEARABLE LIGHTNESS OF BEING (Academy): One of the year’s best. A love triangle set in Czechoslovakia during the 1968 Russian invasion. Moments of eroticism overlay a deeper tapestry of morality and mortality, passion and politics (RPI6). WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT (Savoy 2): Cartoon characters join forces with real-life ones in a highly inventive, technically superb, hilarious story about a zany rabbit who fears his wife has done him wrong, and is then framed for murder. Bob Hoskins heads the human cast (GY).
SAMMY AND ROSIE GET LAID (Metro): The makers of “My Beautiful Laundrette” take a look at the chaos in modernday England through the eyes of an Indian who returns to London after many years away (GA)..
EVIL ANGELS (Regent 1): An indictment of the news media, the police and public opinion in the most bizarre murder trial in Australia’s history. Was tiny Azaria carried off by a dingo, or was she killed by Lindy Chamberlain (Meryl Streep)? We will probably never know (GA). WILLOW (Midcity and Hollywood 2, Sumner): George Lucas turns his mythic storytelling talents from science fiction to fairy tales. A good story, great special effects and a mighty battle, as a hobbit-like hero goes on a quest to save the life of a baby princess (GY). HAIRSPRAY (Pantages, Hornby): Jahn Waters’ eccentric comedy about star-struck teen-age celebrities and their stage mothers, set in Baltimore in 1962. Starring Divine, but not as kinky as Waters’ usual work (GY).
BIG (Savoy 1): See story (GY). NEVER SAY DIE (Regent 2): Geoff Murphy has his hero avoiding bullets and explosions the length and breadth of New Zealand. Light holiday entertainment (GA). SCROOGED (Hollywood 1, Sumner): Bill Murray plays a modern-day Scrooge who is taught a few lessons by the ghosts from Charles Dickens’s “A Christmas Carol” (GA). IMAGINE: JOHN LENNON (Avon): Hundreds of hours of film and interviews are edited into a feature-length documentary about the most controversial of the Beatles (GA). ARTHUR 2 ON THE ROCKS (Westend): Dudley Moore again plays the inebriated millionaire. This time, he loses his fortune. Supported by Liza Minnelli and John Gielgud (GA).
