Claim of secrecy denied

PA Wellington The Ngai Tahu Trust Board chairman, Mr Tipene O’Regan, has denied a claim that the new head of the Ministry of Maori Affairs was appointed in secret.

The Maori Council chairman, Sir Graham Latimer, on Saturday criticised the appointment of educationist Hone (John) Clarke to the new Ministry. He said he was “shocked” by the news

and that Maoridom had not been consulted first. However, Mr O’Regan said Sir Graham’s comments were “quite incorrect” as a large group of people in the Maori world had been consulted before the appointment was made. These consultations had not concerned the actual person who should be appointed to head the new Ministry, but were to establish the qualities, requirements and criteria

for the job. Mr O’Regan said the group with which he was involved had “a two-hour work-out” on those matters. ' The process of actually selecting Mr Clarke for the job was done by another panel. “I do not agree with Sir Graham that the appointment was made in secret“All appointments are made with discretion and a degree of confidentiality,” Mr O’Regan said.
