Pilot killed in aircraft crash

A Fairlie topdressing pilot, aged 47, died yesterday morning when his aircraft crashed on a farm near Orari, South Canterbury. He was Charles Douglas Garrow, of Garrow Aviation, Fairlie. He was the sole occupant of the Fletcher topdressing aircraft that crashed on a farm property at Rangitata Island. Constable Mike Teau, of the Temuka police, said the accident happened about 10.05 a.m. after Mr Garrow had been spraying a paddock of potatoes. It is believed Mr Garrow had completed his third run over the paddock when the accident occurred. An inspector of air accidents from Christchurch examined the crash site yesterday afternoon. A microlite aircraft crashed in Pahiatua on Tuesday, killing the pilot, the sole occupant, the Pahiatua police said. The man’s name has not been released because Australian next-of-kin have yet to be informed. Orari picture, page 3.
