Crowe leads team to win

PA Levin The tactical sense " of the captain, Martin Crowe, aided by accurate bowling and solid batting by Scott Briasco, took Central Districts to a win over Northern Districts in a Shell Cup cricket match at Levin Park Domain yesterday. Northern’s brilliant batting star, Graeme Hick, was starting to get into stride when Crowe brought Briasco into the attack after his faster bowlers failed to contain Hick's awesome power. With the first ball of his third over Briasco clean bowled him with what appeared to be a simple straight slower ball which he never sighted at any stage. Batting first, Central Districts was 213 for seven after its 50 overs. Northern Districts replied with 147 giving Central Districts a win by 66 runs. Northern made an early break through when the opener John Smith

was run out when attempting the second of two leg byes with the score at 18. Stephen Robertson went shortly after and things were not looking good for Central with two wickets down for 26. But then Martin Crowe and the youngster Mark Douglas became associated and pushed the score along to 95 when Crowe went out to a catch by Bradburn off Kuggeleijn playing for him an almost lazy shot. Douglas, who created a big impression with his batting skill, was out shortly after and it was left to Scott Briasco with 57 and Gary Robertson with a fine knock of 40 to consolidate the Central Districts innings. • Brendan Bracewell with two for 37 and Chris Kuggeleijn two for 39 were the best Northern bowlers. At the break Crowe said he was quite happy with the Central Districts effort, adding that he thought that any

runs in excess of 180 on the Domain wicket would be a bonus. His predictions proved correct when Northern was bundled out for a mere 147, Hick being the only batsman to get on top of the Central attack. Gary Robertson made it a great double with three for six and was made “man of the match.” Terry McKenna also bowled well for two for 25 and on this showing could prove an asset to the side. The spinner, Stuart Duff, also bowled steadily for two for 40. The. match was played in perfect conditions on a pitch, which according to both- captains, played much better than expected.
