Drink, driving
Sir,—ln reply to the letter of Christopher Davies (December 7) to make driving licences more difficult to obtain would not remove the cause. Drinkers are victims of a society which condones the imbibing of an intoxicating, narcotic drug having a direct effect on the human brain. A marked change of attitudes would come about if the licensed trade were to take full responsibility for the effects of drinking their products and establish hospitals and homes for all alcoholrelated maladies. The families of victims should also receive support. It is regretted that more prominence was not given to the report of “healthy drinking — a myth” (December 6). The moderation story is also a myth. — Yours, etc.,
M. A. HOGAN. December 13, 1988,
