Too many planning for pay TV, says report

PA Wellington Only two or three of the 10 subscription or pay television channels planned for New Zealand could be sustained by the market, a British economic consultants’ report says.

The report is the basis for the Government’s new market-oriented system of tendering out radio frequencies.

It points to planning, by

several groups, that would lead to 10 subscription or pay TV channels in New Zealand. It is not clear how many groups are planning pay TV but frontrunners include Sky Media, Ltd, Tui Pacific Corporation and a joint venture between Television New Zealand and another organisation. TVNZ is also understood to be considering a Maori channel.

Its plans will probably be announced early next year. Experience in the United States, Britain and France indicates that after five years of pay TV 30 per cent of households are prepared to pay $25 to $4O a month for each channel, the report says. Similar support in New Zealand would mean two or three pay TV channels.
