Heat raises fire fears
The rising temperatures in Canterbury have brought sweat to the brow of fire-fighters at Burgess’s Plantation near Dunsandel. The Selwyn Plantation Board chief executive, Mr Bill Studholme, said the amount of work achieved at the site since a fire last week had been enormous. But he said temperatures were rising and the situation was still extremely dangerous. Two irrigation lines totalling I.skm have been used to damp down the section between burnt and unburnt forest, he said. About 100 staff, nine heavy bulldozers, four loaders, and 12 fire appliances and water tankers, are continuing to work at the site, where 200 hectares were destroyed last week.
