Dogs entertain at home
By JENNY LONG Ten Newfoundland dogs, and Father Christmas, entertained residents of Fairhaven Home and Hospital at a party yesterday afternoon.
The big Newfoundland dogs gave cart-rides to the residents. Some members of the Newfoundland Club had travelled from outside Christchurch to bring their dogs to the home.
A night nurse at the home, Mrs Amanda Heaney, said many of the residents enjoyed patting and seeing the animals. The idea of bringing the dogs to the home came after a successful visit earlier in the year by the Dobermann Club, of which Mrs Heaney is a member. Many of the people in the home had once had dogs or other animals, and they enjoyed having them nearby again. The Newfoundland is a gentle, old breed, with a “most glorious coat,” Mrs Heaney said. Overseas, the dogs are extensively used for water rescue work.
