Wall St lifts on week

NZPA-AP New York The New York stock market turned upward on Friday (early Saturday, N.Z. time) in activity swelled by program traders at the quarterly “triple witching hour.” The Dow Jones average of 30 industrials rose 17.71 points to close at 2150.71, finishing the week with a net gain of 7.22 points.

Some December futures contracts on stock indexes were settled as of the opening, while others were settled at the close of trading. That prompted extra activity by program

traders closing their positions. But, as. has been the case in several recent witching hours, it did not produce much in the way of extra volatility in stock prices. Aside from the witching hour, analysts said traders were still watching warily for signs of the future course of interest rates. The Federal Reserve is generally believed to have tightened credit a notch further this week. In the economic news, the Government reported that the U.S. producer

price of finished goods rose 0.3 per cent in November, in line with advance estimates.
