Lancaster Park women wrap it up

With a convincing win over St Albans on Saturday, Lancaster Park wrapped up the pre-Christmas women’s cricket competition. Sydenham also had a notable win over Riccarton, but the latter still finished second.

At Porritt Park St Albans, batting first on a difficult pitch, scored slowly and cost wickets regularly. Precariously placed at seven for 44 the team gained some respectability from an eight-wicket partnership of 39 between Kay Gilrary and Karen Hadlee, enabling it to reach 102.

With Millichip also in fine batting form, Lancaster Park reached its target in the fortieth over for the loss of four wickets. Millichip, who made an attacking 37 not out, received valuable support from Jenny Olson (13). For St Albans Tracey McNamara bowled with pace and purpose, taking the top off the Lancaster Park innings. Sydenham recorded its second successive win. Two opposing batswomen dominated this game. For Riccarton Jayne Beattie made a well compiled 70 not out. With Katrina Withers she put on 63 for the third wicket, enabling the side to reach 137. Withers

made a sound 24. Bowling honours were shared among Kathrine Ryan, Maria Lewis and Kay Wickes. Maia Lewis was the dominating figure at the crease for Sydenham with a fine 60, which augurs well for her Canterbury debut shortly.
