Onny Parun ousted
PA Auckland Onny Parun, the top seed and defending champion in a grand masters tennis tournament which began in Auckland on Thursday was beaten by the Australian, Ray Ruffels. Parun, aged 41, went down to 42-year-old Ruffels 3-6, 6-3, 1-6. Ken Rosewall, of Australia, later beat Ramanatha Krishnan, of India, 6-3, 6-3. Ruffels, the tennis coach at the Australian Institute of Sport, is playing his first
grand masters tournament. One service break decided the first set and Ruffels won it with two brilliant passing shots in the sixth game to go ahead 4-2. Parun led 3-0 in the second set. He broke Ruffels with a pair of cross-court drives for a 5-1 lead, dropped his service then won the ninth game to level the set scores. The left-handed Ruffels earned himself a 3-0 lead in the decider. That seemed to take the stuffing out of Parun’s effort and Ruffels went on to win comfortably.
