PA Auckland Onny Parun, the top seed and defending champion in a grand masters tennis tournament which began in Auckland on Thursday was beaten by the Australian, Ray Ruffels. Parun, aged 41, went down to 42-year-old Ruffels 3-6, 6-3, 1-6. Ken Rosewall, of Australia, later beat Ramanatha Krishnan, of India, 6-3, 6-3. grand masters tournament. One service break decided the first set and Ruffels won it with two brilliant passing shots in the sixth game to go ahead 4-2. Parun led 3-0 in the second set. He broke Ruffels with a pair of cross-court drives for a 5-1 lead, dropped his service then won the ninth game to level the set scores. The left-handed Ruffels earned himself a 3-0 lead in the decider. That seemed to take the stuffing out of Parun’s effort and Ruffels went on to win comfortably.
