Annie Baird’s albatrosses, brightly acrylic, bounce appealingly. The casual appearance is deceptive. Baird’s observation and handiwork make her art the most appreciated by adults.
Janet Ahlberg’s pen-and-wash drawings, cartooning without caricature, punctuate rather than illustrate. “They hang (picture of hook) their hats and coats (picture) in the cloakroom; have a look (picture of kids observing tiny W.C.s) at the toilets
Chris Gaskin’s cats and kakapo run and hide in an oil-pastelled twilight as sombre as the text. The feline menace is strong. This reviewer confesses to having been put off ornitho-biography picture books in the past by some dreadful New Zealand efforts, but is delighted now to be re-illusioned. —Ken McAllister.
