Mandela moved
NZPA-AP Johannesburg Nelson Mandela, the African National Congress leader imprisoned , for the last 26 years, has been transferred from a clinic to live at a subur-ban-style house on a prison farm. South Africa’s bestknown black leader, now 70 years old, will be allowed unlimited visits with his family at his new quarters, a
modern, one-storey staff house on prison property with a patio, flower garden and swimming pool, according to prison officials. His wife, Winnie, rejected the offer, however, and planned to continue making the standard 40-minute visits to her husband, according to the family’s lawyer, Ismail Ayob. The Government has
faced domestic and international pressure to release Mandela unconditionally, particularly since he was diagnosed in August as having tuberculosis. Officials Indicated that his outright release is not imminent and that restraints on him will be eased in stages so the Government can assess the political impact of his possible freedom.
