Forces chief resigns

NZPA-Reuter New York The Soviet Armed Forces Chief of Staff, Sergi Akhromeyev, has retired for health reasons, a Soviet Foreign Ministry spokesman, Gennady Gerasimov, said yesterday. He added that the Defence Minister, Dimitri Yazov, would stay on in his post. The comments, made in an interview on the C.N.N. television network, came after the Soviet leader, Mikhail Gorbachev, announced major plans to cut Soviet troop strength in a speech to the United Nations. Mr Gerasimov insisted the retirement had nothing to do with the troop cut announcement and said Marshal Akhromeyev, aged 65, will remain as an adviser to Mr Gorbachev.

He said the Armed Services chief retired strictly for health reasons.

The lean, austere Akhromeyev was appointed chief of staff in 1984 following the shooting down of a Korean airliner over Soviet territory in the Far East. He replaced Marshal Nikolai Ogarkov. Mr Yazov, in rank only a general and formerly junior to Marshal Akhromeyev, was appointed Defence Minister in May, 1987, on the dismissal of Sergei Sokolov.
