Builders’ labourers strike
Striking builders’ labourers will disrupt Christchurch construction sites today as they protest against employers’ wage offers.
A meeting of more than 200 builders’ labourers yesterday voted “significantly” to strike for 24 hours.
The southern branch secretary of the New Zealand Labourers’ Union, Mr Barry Brown, said the workers were unhappy
with the employers’ 2.5 per cent wage offer. The builders’ labourers are demanding a 7 per cent wage round.
Builders’ labourers in the North Island centres of Auckland, Wellington, Rotorua, Wanganui, Kawerau and Hamilton voted yesterday to take similar protest action.
Workers should return to their sites tomorrow morning.
