Rare tennis grand slam
When the Grand Slam of tennis is raised fans immediately trot out the names of Don Budge, Rod Laver and — from September 1 — Steffi Graf. Hardly anyone mentions Owen Davidson of Australia. Yet in 1967 “Davo” won the Grand Slam in major mixed doubles. He won the Australian Open in
partnership with his fellow Australian, Lesley Turner, and took the Wimbledon, French and U.S. titles alongside the American, Billie Jean King. He remains the only male player to have accomplished the feat.
The Texas-based Australian can be seen in action in Auckland from December 15 when he
returns to play in the second A.5.8.-Unisys Grand Masters tennis tournament.
The win at Wimbledon during the Grand Slam year was the first of four that Davidson and King would combine for in mixed doubles finals there, and came 7-5, 6-2, over Ken Fletcher and Maria Bueno.
