Dip in real wages
PA Wellington The after-tax purchasing power of full-time wage-and-salary earners, as measured by the Statistics Department’s real disposable income index, fell 0.4 per cent in the September quarter.
The index fell 0.6 per cent
over the 12 months from the September quarter last year.
The income tax cuts from October 1 will help purchasing power in the present quarter. The decline in real disposable incomes has been most pronounced among the lowest-paid wage and salary earners.
