U.K. closure
Britain’s Conservative Government has announced the closure of North East Shipbuilders, Ltd, a subsidiary of state-owned British Shipbuilders, ending six centuries of ship-building in the northeast. The announcement, made to Parliament by Industry Minister, Tony Newton, came after a six-month search for a private buyer for British Shipbuilders. About 2000 people will lose their jobs and a further 4000 workers in supply industries will be at risk in an area where one in five of the workforce are already jobless.
