Square litter

A full-time cleaner is needed to fix Cathedral Square’s “atrocious” litter problem, the Christchurch City Council’s works and traffic committee was told last evening. The committee chairman, Cr Ron Wright, said areas of the Square left a lot to be desired and cleaning methods had failed to deal with the litter.

“There’s no way it is going to continue. The standards set to keep the Square clean have not been maintained,” he said.

The council’s works engineer, Mr Bruce Scott, said Cr Wright’s move for a full-time worker might not be the answer.

“We’ye had them before but after a while they lose their enthusiasm.”
