Radiographers in doubt
Cancer patients may have to wait for radiation treatment next year because the Canterbury Hospital Board cannot afford to employ more radiographers. In November last year, patients had to wait nearly three weeks for treatment because of high workloads and staff shortages in the department.
The Cancer Society helped and funded two additional radiographers for one year. This funding empires on February 15 next year and a report to the health services committee yesterday said that the board could not afford to continue to employ the radiographers.
The . medical superintendent of Christchurch Hospital, Dr David Andrews, said that without the radiographers the waiting list would probably worsen from no waiting time now to about three or four weeks. “But if one is waiting for surgery for a malignant condition one may be waiting a short time.
