Hazlett favoured at Addington

By JEFF SCOTT Hazlett, which recorded a win and a second at the New Zealand Cup meeting last month, is favoured to win the C2 mobile pace over 2600 m at the Canterbury Park Trotting Club’s on-course meeting at Addington this evening. The Lordship-Mary Tudor entire came with an undeniable burst to win going away from Rebel Skipper and Freedom Fighter over tonight’s distance in 3:19.5 on the first night of the Cup meeting, then raced up to that form by chasing home Happy Hazel in a class record run for 2000 m mobile on the last night of the carnival. .

Part-owned by a Christchurch veterinarian, Bill Bishop, and trained by the father and son partnership of Tom and Barry Clark, Hazlett had shown promise from his juvenile days, but has constantly been plagued by niggling injuries. He has the breeding and scope to progress well past his present ranking. Colonel Poplar showed his fitness for this by bolting in at the Rangiora trials on Monday and should be in the firing line throughout from his handy draw. Dixie Tryax, placed fresh-up on the first night of the Cup meeting, produced a dour finish from the third line to win at Methven last Saturday and is drawn to end up in a similar position again tonight. x . Toss, the winner of two and twice fourth from only four outings to date, must be respected. He started from the outside of the second row in a lower grade at the New Brighton on-course meeting last month and was equal to the occasion, winning by two lengths in 3:22 for the mobile 2600 m.

Dreamin Scheme too, has more ability than most in this grade, but may need some luck from a second-line draw, while Anzus and Dalgety’s Gift could place at false odds. A feature of the night will be whether the growing course jackpot, starting with a pool of $7845, can be struck. The jackpot is run on races five to nine inclusive.

Robert Cameron, who is Addington Raceway’s leading reinsman this season, going into tonight’s Canterbury Park on-course meeting. Cameron, who trails Ricky May by one among the South Island reinsmen on the national premiership, has driven 21 winners this season, 13 at Addington. The list of season’s leaders at Addington are: R.
