No walk of fame for Tayler feat

By

BARRY CLARKE

Dick Tayler, New Zealand’s hero of the 1974 Commonwealth Games in Christchurch, won’t be recognised in a new sports walk of fame at Queen Elizabeth II Park.

The Christchurch City Council’s parks and recreation committee last evening refused to acknowledge Tayler’s 10,000 m gold medal winning feat, saying only great sporting deeds from this year on would be marked. The decision drew protests from Cr Charles Manning, who said recognising Tayler’s gold was the ideal way to open the walk of fame.

“He won the gold at Q.E.11. It was a world-standard perform-

ance. “I think the ’74 Games should be marked too. What better way than with Tayler’s achievement?” Cr Manning said. However, the committee chairman, Cr Clive Cotton, said it was too difficult to judge sporting achievements over past years and decades alongside those of today. Sporting feats will be marked on bronze plaques near the main entrance of the park. Work will begin soon. A committee comprising three representatives each from the City Council and Canterbury Sports Foundation and one from the news media will decide which feats will be recognised.
