Chileans protest

NZPA-AFP Santiago Bombs, barricades and blackouts yesterday marked a day of nationalprotest against the military Government of the Chilean President, Augusto Pinochet, police said.

At least three bombs exploded in western Santiago, destroying an electrical pylon and cutting electrical service to several regions of the capital. During the subsequent blackout, groups of protesters set up burning barricades across the city and chanted anti-Pinochet slogans.

Protesters also burned a public bus and torched a neighbourhood community centre, police said. Business and professional organisations belonging to the so-called Social Accord for Democracy (A.C.U.5.0.) joined opposition parties in supporting the national protest, which came two months after General Pinochet lost an October 5 plebiscite aimed at extending his rule until 1997.
