Jones ‘arrested in public toilet’
NZPA Sydney The arrest of an Australian personality and former national rugby coach, Alan Jones, relates to an alleged incident in a men’s lavatory in central London, according to a Sydney newspaper report.
Rupert Murdoch’s “Daily Mirror,” Sydney’s only evening paper, yesterday splashed the story of Jones’s arrest across its front page, giving it more prominence than the report about three Australian diplomats being expelled from Yugoslavia. An Australian Broadcasting Corporation correspondent in London also reported early yesterday that Jones was arrested in
a public toilet, but most Australian news media mentioned none of the alleged circumstances surrounding his arrest. The “Melbourne Herald” carried four paragraphs of the arrest on its front page and the “Brisbane Sun” also featured the story on its front page.
The “Mirror” said Jones appeared tired and drawn when he answered his door to its reporter at a flat in London’s Piccadilly area. “As you can appreciate, I do not wish to say anything right now. I am very tired and I just want to go to sleep,” he is quoted as saying.
Jones, who yesterday was
bailed to appear before magistrates on a charge of outraging public decency, was the Australian rugby team coach from 1984 until he was replaced by Bob Dwyer this year.
His successes included a grand slam tour of the British Isles in 1984 and winning the Bledisloe Cup from New Zealand in 1986.
For his services to sport he was made a member of the General Division of the Order of Australia in the Australia Day honours list this year.
He was senior adviser and speech writer to a former Australian Prime Minister, Mr Malcolm Fraser, between 1979 and 1981.
