Kindergartens to close
The majority of Christchurch kindergartens will be closed tomorrow, as teachers take strike action over their award talks.
Teachers in the Nelson and West Coast areas will not be striking for a full day, but have voted to send children home half an hour early some days next week. The action was taken after the teachers’ employers offered to delay full negotiations of the award until May next year. Teachers would in the meantime be given a lump-sum bonus of $144. Christchurch teachers will rally in Cathedral Square tomorrow morning, and then deliver protest letters to the State Services Commission, the Education Department and the Kindergarten Association.
