Cot deaths
Sir, — It seems to me that the Government has got its priorities wrong. With the high rate of cot deaths in Canterbury, surely it would be logical to put funding into research and prevention of this major health problem before putting money into an “in vitro fertilisation programme. If they postponed it for two years and put the $220,000 annual amount into this project, it could be started in the new year. The I.V.F. programme will help only a small number of women to give birth to babies, a percentage of whom, statistically, will die of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Let us try to stop babies dying before we concern ourselves with increasing the birth rate. They managed to reduce cot deaths in Sheffield to 0.3 per cent; surely we can follow their example? — Yours, etc., JUDY M. WATERS. November 29, 1988.
Sir, — I agree entirely with M. J. M. and G. M. Griffiths (November 29). Money can be found for all the latest babymaking techniques and yet we are losing all these healthy babies every year. The research is needed urgently. A little from each Canterbury family would make it possible.— Yours, etc.,
B. S. RANKIN. November 30, 1988.
