Stabbed man improving A man stabbed early on Friday while trying to expel people from a function at Lyttelton remained seriously ill in Christchurch Hospital yestersday, but his condition was said to be improving. Mr Shaun Noland, aged 21, was stabbed about 12.45 a.m. while trying to remove a group from a function at the Lyttelton Rugby Clubrooms. Car flips on highway A car on its roof in the middle of State Highway 73 greeted motorists west of Porters Pass on Friday evening. Constable Phillip Lynch; of Darfield, said the car appeared to have left the road on a straight stretch and flipped. It came to rest in the middle of the road, delaying other traffic. Motorists moved the car to the roadside. Constable Lynch said the two occupants were thought to have accepted a lift from the accident scene before his arrival. Inquiries were being made in Christchurch to find the registered owner of the extensively damaged car. Constable Lynch said the car had been travelling west. The pair, who were not thought to have been seriously hurt, had earlier stopped at Springfield. The accident occurred near the turn-off to the Broken River ski-field, about 25km west of Porters Pass. Thieves trade up The dumping of an unlawfully taken car and the taking of another just 200 m away are being investigated by the Darfield police. Constable Phillip Lynch said a Mini car unlawfully taken from Wakefield Avenue, Sumner, some time after 11.30 p.m. on Friday was dumped at Kowai Bush about 5 a.m. on Saturday. Those responsible are thought to have taken a nearby Subaru station waggon, valued about $lO,OOO. The waggon, registration JW6421, was still sought last evening. Police suspect arson A garage fire on the site of the old Christchurch Boys’ Home, in Stanmore Road, is being treated as arson by the Christchurch police. The Fire Service, which received the call just after 12.30 a.m. on Saturday found the corrugated iron building well ablaze. The garage, at the rear of the site, was empty. Alarm checks burglars Burglars forced their way into the ceiling of the Glenbyre Tavern, Bromley, early yesterday during an attempted break-in. The offenders appeared to have been trying to get from the ceiling to the tavern just after 4 a.m. when they set off the alarm. They fled. Police inquiries are continuing.
