Action to hit water heating
By
JANE DUNBAR
Water-heating cuts are likely in Christchurch today because of industrial action by electricity workers.
Details of the industrial action, which will affect about 30 per cent of power stations, were announced by the Public Service Association yesterday. South Island stations at Roxburgh, Tekapo, ColeridgeHighbank, Benmore, Aviemore and Waitaki will be affected by the eight-hour action, which begins at 8 a.m. Municipal Electricity Department staff yesterday declined to comment on the possible effects of the strike on the city. But on Friday, the department’s managing director, Mr Chris Laurie, said waterheating cuts were likely to be necessary. The action is in protest at pay offers of between 1.2 per cent and 2.2 per cent from Eiectricorp, in response to wage claims of between 4.5 per cent and 9 per cent.
The P.S.A. advocate for the power workers, Mr Denis Asher, said action would be intensified next week if Eiectricorp did not adopt a “more reasonable” attitude to the award talks.
