Junior’s form impressive in surf lifesaving

Impressive early-season form by a junior, Jacob Lane (Taylor’s Mistake), was a feature of the opening competition day of the surf lifesaving season at Waimairi beach yesterday. Lane contested most of the open craft events with marked success, taking out both the ironman and malibu board races. His skill on the board was a key to victory in the ironman. He led from Peter Walker (Waimairi) and Geoff Barry (South Brighton) after the ski leg, but conceded a big lead to Barry after the swim. Although Barry led at the buoys in the board paddle, both Lane and Dene Warn (Taylor’s Mistake) swamped him on the run in to the beach.

Another major impact was made by the South Brighton boat crew, which convincingly won the first three races, and bowed only to North Beach B in the final event. That run of impressive performances clinched a place in the Canterbury team for South Brighton. The talented South Brighton all-rounder, Leigh Jenkins, had mixed results in the beach events. He won the junior beach sprint convincingly, but when poised to take

South Brighton to a win during the final leg of the junior beach relay, Jenkins dropped the baton.

The youth training competition run in conjunction with the main competition was highlighted by the institution of a taplin relay involving young lifeguards from all three grades. New Brighton snatched a narrow victory from South Brighton thanks to expertise on the board legs. Abbreviations used in the results are Taylor’s Mistake (TM), Sumner (S), South Brighton (SB), North Beach (Nthß), Waimairi (Wai), Waikuku Beach (WB), New Brighton (Newß), Spencer Park (SP).
