Lord Lenny breaks bone

Special correspondent Auckland Lord Lenny broke a pedal bone during a workout at Pukekohe on Saturday morning and will not race for at least six months.

His trainer, Owen Purdon, was confident Lord Lenny had recovered from his exertions at last month’s New Zealand Cup meeting at Addington and

was “cherry ripe” for a tilt at the $400,000 Ansett New Zealand Auckland Cup at Alexandra Park on December 29.

“It’s just one of those things,” said Purdon on Saturday night. “I’m extremely disappointed because he’s been a great horse to me, as well as being the biggest earner in the stable.”

Purdon said Lord Lenny

looked in outstanding condition when romping in a paddock last Friday. “He was tearing round like a mad thing and I was really looking forward to the (Auckland) cup meeting,” he said. “When he was working this morning I felt him falter and we later found out he’d broken his near front pedal bone. "The vets reckon he’ll

be away from racing for at least six months.” Lord Lenny has been plagued with injury since entering Purdon’s stable towards the end of his four-year-old season. Ligament trouble hindered the six-year-old’s campaign last season. Purdon believed if Lord Lenny was to "go” again it would have been in the same area.
