Diamond Annie in sparkling form for Timaru today

By

ALEX McMILLAN

The John Parsons-trained mare, Diamond Annie, scored her first South Island win at the Phar Lap Raceway in July and will be at restricted odds when she lines up again on that South Canterbury course today.

A maiden winner from Alan Jones’s Cambridge stable earlier last season, Diamond Annie was having only her third start for Parsons when successful at the South Canterbury Hunt meeting and in the interim has assembled a splendid record, one vastly superior to that of any of her six opponents in the $BOOO Reg Marsh Autos Four-year-old Handicap today. A stylish winner of a Cl 1400 m event at Riccarton at the end of September, Diamond Annie has been in fine touch since, finishing second to Immunize in the 1400 m Canterbury Breeders’ Stakes at Riccarton on October 15 and chasing home the talented North Islander, Aquidity, over 1400 m on the middle day of the New Zealand Cup carnival.

Unsuited by the Hokitika track conditions when contesting the 1650 m Miss Scenicland 10,000 on November 23, Diamond Annie still managed a second

placing behind Veda and was far from disgraced when fourth behind her stablemate, Tirana, over 1400 m at Omoto four days later.

Today’s 1600 m should suit ideally and with 55.5 kg Diamond Annie is meeting her rivals very favourably in the first leg of the Timaru Racing Club’s T.A.B. treble.

Three Guys, an impressive winner and a solid second in two starts at Invercargill last month, looms as a danger, with Tolerate and No Bugles perhaps the best prospects for longer odds. The Ashburton-based rider, Raymond Bruce, will partner Diamond Annie and will be looking for earlier success with Fly Baby in the day’s feature event, the $lO,OOO Show Gate Fillies Mile.

The Michael Pitman-trained chestnut meets only six rivals, five of which are still maidens, and with such a disappoint-

ing response from trainers the Timaru Club has been unable to accord the event T.A.B. double or treble status.

Fly Baby, a useful fourth behind the classy North Island fillies, Olga’s Pal, Kate’s Myth and Imperialaire, in last month’s One Thousand Guineas at Riccarton, preceded that performance with effortless wins at Gore and Motukarara and, even though today’s race will be her first in more than four weeks, she should show her class.

The Garth Jackson-trained maiden, Soundoration, has performed creditably in two starts to date and could pose a threat today in the hands of Grant Davison.

Davison advanced his season’s tally to 42 when kicking home the Graeme Rogerson-trained Fortez at Waipukurau last Friday and although he does not have an outstanding book today several

of his mounts appear reasonable chances.

Michael Pitman will provide the topweight in each leg of today’s T.A.B. double.

Super Jack, twice successful in the wet on the recent West Coast circuit, may find today’s firmer conditions less suitable in the first leg, the 1600 m Kilmorey Romdale Stud Handicap, but Mistella, which downed Fury (a winner by 10 lengths last Monday) on the first day at Greymouth, must be respected in the second leg, the Glenelg Romney Sprint (1200 m

The likely favourite in that C 4 event is Dan’s Double, a useful filly having her first outing from Tony and Lyn Prendergast’s stable, although Silver Song, which justified inspired support in her debut at Greymouth last week, must be hard to beat again in the hands of claiming apprentice, Raylene Fraser.
