Riccarton loses to St Albans in close battle

St Albans toppled the competition leader, Riccarton, by the barest of margins in senior women’s cricket at Porritt Park on Saturday. With Lancaster Park having a well judged win over Sydenham it has now joined Riccarton at the top of the competition. Riccarton batted first and made a sound start through Delwyn Brownlee and Jayne Beattie, who went on to record a gritty half century. A useful 21 was added by Katrina Withers as Riccarton progressed to 147 all out. For St Albans Mandy Ormandy and Lyndel McMeek-

ing bowled tightly, while Vicki Burtt picked up three wickets.

In reply, Burtt and Ormandy put on 87 for the first wicket and an attacking 24 from Anita Bremner, including a six over mid-wicket which landed in a creek, raised the scoring rate at a vital time.

The seasoned campaigners Karen Hadlee and Kay Gilray were left to finish the job with two runs needed from the last ball.

Gilray cut it into the gully but she was run out going for the second run. However, although the scores were tied at 147 St Albans had lost less wickets.

At Sydenham Park, Lancaster Park was in early trouble against the home side at three for 11. However, Rebecca Millichip again rescued the innings with a splendid 59 supported by Jenny Olson who made 22. Lancaster Park were all out in the sixtieth over for 145. For Sydenham Cheryl

McMeekan and Katherine Ryan bowled tidily taking wickets at crucial times.

The Sydenham innings received a solid boost in the middle order from Andrea Devine (35) and Kay Wickes (27) to maintain the required scoring rate but faded in the latter stages when Millichip and Lisa Astle returned to the bowling crease. Sydenham finished 14 runs short of its target in spite of a forceful knock by Carol Ashby at the end. Riccarton v St Albans Riccarton D. K. Brownlee std Jamieson b Burtt 26 J. A.
