Lynagh leads rout of Italy

NZPA-AAP Rome Michael Lynagh joined the Australian rugby tour one-third of the way through, but ended it by scoring more than onethird of the points in the 55-6 win over Italy on Saturday. Lynagh’s 23-point tally from a try, a penalty goal

and eight conversions, equalled his own test record for the fourth time. “This is the best I’ve seen Michael Lynagh play in international rugby,” said the coach, Bob Dwyer. “Our midfield is playing much better than in our own Australian winter.

“Our backline stands shallow, our support play is better and our scrums and line-outs are better,” Mr Dwyer said. Eight of the nine tries scored against Italy were from Australian backs — with hat-tricks to the wings, Acura Niuqila, and David Campese.

Campese’s three gave him 15 for the nine-week tour and took his world record to 32 from 42 tests.

It was Australia’s fifth win over Italy in as many matches since 1973, with the most recent being the 39-18 victory in Brisbane two years ago.
