Snooker win
PA Hamilton Tony Wharerau (Counties) won his first big snooker tournament when he beat Barry Moore (Auckland), 3-2, in the final of the $5OOO Waikato Open snooker tournament in Hamilton yesterday. A quality final saw Moore gain a 2-1 ascendency when he potted a respotted black in the third frame.
Wharerau responded well to take the next frame comfortably. The final frame saw Moore leading, 34-18, before Wharerau took control and Moore was forced to concede late in the colours when trailing 34-63. Results: Quarter-finals: T. Gorton (Counties) b P. Hourigan (Waikato) 3-1, T. Wharerau (Counties) b K. Haycock (Wanganui) 3-1, B. Moore (Auckland) b A. Tonge (Waikato) 3-1, W. Tane (King Country) b P. Boyce (King Country) 3-0. Semi-final: Wharerau b Gorton 3-2; Moore b Tane 3-0. Final: Wharerau b Moore 3-2.
