Addington Cautious bids for store lambs

A very large yarding of store lambs attracted cautious bidding at the Addington market yesterday. The over-all quality of the 11,471 lambs yarded was slightly down on last week, when 7656 were yarded. Many of the lambs presented for sale arrived three to four weeks earlier than a normal season because of the drought. Most of the buyers came from Canterbury, and a very large part of the yarding would be farmed on. The sale opened up to $2.50 back on medium-to-good lambs, while lighter lambs dropped $1 back on last week. Prices lifted midway through the sale and came close to last week’s values. Few sales were made over $l3, although, a line of Corriedales from Achray Partnership, of Rotherham, made up to $l5. Most good lambs made $lO to $l3, with medium lambs at $7 to $lO, and light lambs from $5 with a few sales of very light lambs from $2. Most of the sales were made at $8 to $ll. Sales of adult ewes were difficult, with a large percentage of the 1250 strong yarding made up of light stock which sold at $2 to $5. Few pens made more than $lO, although an exceptional sale of 42 woolly Merino ewes made $33. A line of shorn three-shear Romney ewes made $15.25, mixed-

aged shorn Borderdales reached $14.75 and a consignment of woolly Corriedales made $13.25. A few pens of four-tooths made $lO to $l2. Another small yarding of 100 store cattle met a strong demand from buyers. The quality was mixed and no adult cattle were offered for sale. A pen of well-bred Hereford steers made $3OO. A few pens of beef-bred cattle sold well with the balance made up of dairy-bred stock. Sales included.— Store lambs: Woodstock Station (View Hill), 150 Romney Cryptorchids at $9.20 to $ll.BO, 227 Romney ewes at $4.40 to $9.60; Orton Bradley Park (Charteris Bay), 235 Romney ewes at $7 to $lO, 212 Romney Cryptorchids at $8 to $9.40; Achray Partnership (Rotherham), 829 Corriedale rams at $9.20 to $l5, 404 Corriedale ewes at $6 to $10; Whakamoa Farm (Wainui), 722 Romney wethers at $6.30 to $12.30, 174 Romney ewes at $6.30; Teviotdale (Amberley), 353 mixed-sex Corriedales at $4.50 to $7.40; W. D. Latham (Little River), 649 Romney wethers at $5 to $ll.BO, 441 Romney ewes at $10.50 to $12.60; J. A. and A. A. Calder (Culverden), 136 Corriedale wethers at $12.60. Store ewes: C. and M.
