A week in January has been set down for taking depositions on rioting charges and against 10 inmates of Addington remand prison. In the District Court yesterday, Judge Fraser remanded the 10 in custody to January 16. An estimated $lO,OOO worth of damage was done by the alleged rioters, according to the police. Those accused of rioting on October 22 are: George William Murray, aged 22, and Daniel Kotua Wehi, aged 38, both represented by Mr D. J. Taffs, Tana Panapa, aged 31 (Mr R. Glover), Dawson Michael Jobe, aged 21 (Mr E. Bedo), Richard
Sven Ornberg, aged 36 (Mr P. H. B. Hall), Elte Gareth Brown, aged 23 (Mr W. Rosenberg), Darryle Campbell, aged 29 (Mr A. N. D. Garrett), Arthur Melvin Harris, aged 20 (Mr M. J. Glue), Dean Noble, aged 21, and Joseph Robert Tumene Wiringi, aged 26, both represented by Mr M. J. Knowles. As well as a rioting charge, Ornberg faces two charges of injuring prison officers, and Jobe is charged with injuring an officer. PERIODIC DETENTION Six months periodic detention was given to a 32-year-old housewife who fraudulently obtained almost $14,000 from the
Social Welfare Department. Lynette Williams (Mrs A. M. Edwards), had earlier admitted fraudulently obtaining unemployment benefits and a special needs grant, at Dunedin, amounting to $13,971, between September, last year, and June, this year. Mrs Williams said these offences pre-dated other offences for which her client had been given a sentence of periodic detention. At the time she was involved in alcohol and drugs and was suffering from severe financial hardship, said Mrs Edwards.
