Action on sacking to be decided
PA Auckland The sacked Waitemata City Manager, Mr Dave Weir, will decide whether to sue the council for firing him years before he was due to retire. Mr Weir was dumped from the council on Tuesday evening, after 33 years of service, at a special meeting called by the Mayor, Mr Tim Shadbolt. The former deputy mayor, Mr Gary Taylor, said the dismissal was part of the Mayor’s plan to rid the council of people who questioned his schemes. ;•
Mr Weir was the only staff member who consistently pointed out to Mr Shadbolt things he could and should not do, Mr Taylor said. “God knows what would happen if people like Dave Weir were removed. There would be no brakes on the council.” he said. Mr Weir said he was not expecting the decision and would consider whether to go to the Labour Court and maybe the High Court. Mr Weir’s contract has another two years to run and he was not due to retire until 1997, when he would be 65, he said.'
