Hawke takes tough stance
NZPA-AAP Canberra The Australian Government will not “limit its options” if the Yugoslav authorities do not fully cooperate over the shooting of a Croatian youth outside their Sydney Consulate on Sunday, Prime Minister Bob Hawke said yesterday. Mr Hawke would not
discuss the options at a news conference, but he did not rule out closing down the Consulate, a move urged by the Opposition. “It is appropriate we put directly to the Yugoslav authorities what the implications of non-co-operation are,” he said. Mr Hawke was speaking as Sydney detectives were
negotiating with the Consulate for another interview with a guard, Matijas Zoran, after an unfinished 70-minute session with him on Tuesday afternoon. The Prime Minister said the Government was deeply concerned about the shooting of Josef Tokic and was adopting a “very strong positon.”
