Nelson firm hiring staff
PA Nelson A Nelson clothing manufacturer is increasing production as deregulation of the industry threatens to send other firms to the wall. Martha Washington, Ltd, is hiring 10 machinists to swell its 80-strong staff. The managing director, Mr Steve Fergusson, said his firm had responded well to the challenge of deregulation but the Gov-
ernment should not push the troubled industry any harder. Deregulation forced the 45-year-old family business to increase efficiency and target its markets to survive competition from imports. Overheads were reduced and new machinery introduced as Martha Washington targeted “fast fashion” chainstore type clothing as its niche market.
