NZPA-Reuter Ottawa The main provisions of the United States-Canada
free trade agreement, the central issue in yesterday’s Canadian parliamentary elections are: • Elimination of all bilateral tariffs by the end of 1998 on products ranging from skis to steel. Eighty per cent of the SUSISO billion ($230 billion) worth of annual twoway trade now flows duty free.
• Establishment of binational panels to settle future trade disputes in-
volving countervailing duties and anti-dumping measures © Greater Canadian access to the United States energy market in return for more secure access to Canadian resources. President Ronald Reagan and Mr Brian Mulroney signed the trade accord last January, subject to approval by their legislatures. Mr Mulroney called elections last month after opposition Liberals
blocked approval of the deal in Canada’s Parliament.
