Rare visit by petrel

Mrs Beverley Broad of the Animal and Bird Hospital in Ferry Road with “Gary,” the Southern petrel found at Birdlings Flat on Monday. Gary, who was named after one of the assistants at the hospital, was believed to have been blown ashore by the westerly winds. “It is not usual for the petrel to come ashore as they live their lives at sea,” Mrs Broad said. Gary has a wing span of about two metres and was estimated to be a year old. The bird was uncomfortable in Canterbury’s temperatures as they breed in the cooler climate of Macquarie

Island. Gary will stay at the hospital for about a week before he is returned to the island. The hospital w.as requesting food for Gary, who eats saltwater fish. The Broads are forming a bird rescue unit at the hospital and will accept any helpless or stranded bird brought to them. Photograph by SEAN CARR.
