Challenged advt reprinted

PA Hamilton The Group Opposed to Advertising Liquor (G.0.A.L.) is angry that the “Listener” has republished an advertisement which has been deemed to have broken alcohol advertising guidelines. In September, Hamilton’s G.O.A.L. spokesman, Mr Cliff Turner, com-; plained to the Advertising Standards Council about a Kiwi Lager advertisement in the weekly which he believed broke advertising rules. The advertisement shows Bruno Lawrence drinking the beer with the caption, “Right There With The Winners In Your Street.” Mr Turner said the ad-

vertisement broke one of the guidlines in the code of advertising alcohol beverages because it associated liquor with success. The guidelines say that alcohol advertisements should not suggest alcohol is a necessary element of success or an essential part of the pleasure and excitement of living. In early November the standards council upheld! Mr Turner’s complaint but when Mr Turner opened the latest “Listener” last week, he found the same advertisement printed unchanged. The managing editor of the “Listener,” Mr David Beatson, said the magazine was not happy with the council’s decision and planned to appeal it.
