Straight Order poised to give trainer Bayer record

Special correspondent Wellington Patrick Campbell is poised to become the first trainer to win a brace of Bayer Classics when he saddles up Straight Order in the $195,000 one mile feature at the Levin Racing Club’s meeting this evening.

The race, which began as the Levin Turf Classic, is having its seventh renewal. Campbell, who trains at Awapuni, won his first in 1983 with the excellent filly, Burletta, and there seems no reason why Straight Order can not turn the tables on Krona, which beat him in the Two Thousand Guineas at Riccarton earlier this month. The second of the classic races, in which Testament ran second and Straight Order third, was a rough race. No galloper suffered more than Straight Order when checked on the turn. At the finish he was just over three lengths from the winner, but the trainer has no doubt that with a clear run, the final stages would have developed into a three-way contest rather than just the battle between Krona and Testament. Straight Order has come through his Riccarton trip in good shape. “I am more than happy with him,” Campbell said yesterday. “His condition could not be better.” The Bayer seems certain to be Straight Order’s last race for a couple of months. Campbell didn’t enter him in either the Avondale Guineas or the New Zealand Derby and safely through today’s test, he might be freshened and then come back for the Wellington Cup meeting at Trentham.

Straight Order has had four races this season. After wins against his own age group at Waverley and New Plymouth, he outclassed his rivals by five lengths in the Wellington Thoroughbred Breeders’ Guineas before going to Riccarton. Straight Order has drawn No. 11, but he should come in four places before starting time. Already Lord Tonic and Raie Lunaire have been scratched from the field, which lets Teleretta and Fast Draw back into the field, while Whodunnit, an emergency is also out. Two of the three remaining ballots, which include Fernoon, also a Campbell runner, have drawn inside the Straight Strike gelding, which seems likely to start the favourite.

While Campbell will be trying for his second training win, a couple of the riders engaged are also attempting to win the race for a second time. They are Peter Tims and Maurice Campbell. Tims, who rode Krona at Riccarton, is back up today. Last year he won the Bayer on Young Indian. Campbell won the 1982 running on the filly, Our Flight. He will ride Sir Jugular, a colt he trains himself. Krona is trained by Roger McGlade and in 12 starts, he has yet to finish further back than fifth. Before going on to Riccarton, he won at Rotorua and he chased Testament home in the Winstone Guineas at Ellerslie and before that was second behind Secret Indian in the Guineas Trial. Krona will start from the outside of the mile field, which isn’t the best

barrier at Levin. Maurice Campbell has a dual interest in the race. Apart from riding and training Sir Jugular, he has the filly, Vinegar Lil, starting. Brian Hibberd will ride her. As well, both three-year-olds are by Truly Vain, the stallion Campbell stands on his Feilding property. Sir Jugular has had leg problems, but his record this season is three wins from four starts. He won fresh at Gisborne and then after running fourth on the opening day of the Hawke’s Bay spring meeting, went on to take the Guineas there on the second. It was two months before he raced again, and that outing brought a win in the Levin Trial at Woodville a week ago. Sir Jugular should show the benefit of that gallop this afternoon. Vinegar Lil was eighth in the same contest, but she didn’t get much luck in the running. Kate’s Myth and Signet Ring are the other form fillies.

Kate’s Myth has both the Cavanagh Stakes and Lowland in the bag this season. Since then she was third in the Desert Gold Stakes and second in the One Thousand Guineas, both won by Olga’s Pal.

Olga’s Pal, along with Testament, Espiare and Imperialaire, are the name gallopers which, for one reason or another, are absent today. Kate’s Myth has had time to freshen since Riccarton. Her record shows seven wins from 10 starts, with two thirds her “worst” efforts.

Signet Ring beat a useful field just over a week ago when successful in the $20,000 Te Rapa Stud Guineas Trial (1400 m

So far Our Flight is the only Levintrained galloper to win the Bayer, but a Levin steward, Mick Preston, has Rutene in the field. He won his first two races this term before running third in the Feilding three-year-old feature. Preston has had the Bayer in mind for Rutene all season and the colt’s chances have to be respected. Bravo Bell has emerged as a colt of high promise with two wins and two thirds to show from his last four starts. This son of Balmerino won on Cup day at Riccarton, while Purdah’s Pride, which won the Ryder here last July, gets his chance to make up for some disappointing efforts, though an outside draw is no help. Courier Bay’s second run back in the $30,000 Levin Stakes will be another feature of the day. He will face strong opposition from the likes of Lady Aloof, Squire Gray and Classic March, while Kiwi Affair is a form runner from Te Aroha.

The Stakes will also be graced by the presence of Candide, which is having her first run back since failing in the Melbourne Cup earlier this month.
