Jones now fifth
Ray Jones, the East Christchurch - Shirley opening batsman, is now fifth on the ail-time list of run scorers for the club after reaching exactly 5000 runs, against High School Old Boys on Saturday. Jones, who made his debut for East Shirley in 1976-77, had scored 4688 runs up until the start of the season.
Scores of 3, 48, 17. 6,5, 59 not out, 64, 47 and 63 in his nine innings so far have pushed him to 5000. Former East Shirley players still above Jones are Peter Coman (7938), John Grocott (7288), Tom
Kennedy (7012) and Vin James (5212). Jones has made only one century for East
Shirley, in 1983-84 against Old Collegians, but has 33 fifties to his credit.
He had a handful of games for Canterbury in 1980-81 but failed to establish a regular place and has not been called upon since. His availability for club play has proved a bonus for East Shirley over the years. As well as the 5000 runs he has scored, Jones has taken 77 catches in 132 matches and captained the side for several years before handing over to Tony Gray this year.
