Property buying delay
The Christchurch City Council has deferred approval of purchase of properties adjacent to the .suggested new civic art gallery site pending a report on town planning implications. A clause seeking council approval in principle for a three year campaign to buy available sites next to the Rolleston Avenue youth hostel site was withdrawn at this week’s council meeting. The hostel site and the adjacent car-park are owned by the council and are zoned residential SA.
The use of the land for an art gallery would need a District Scheme change for the site. Cr Alister James said he knew of submissions on a future gallery site coming from the Institute of Architects and the C.S.A. Gallery. He suggested further discussion of the site and any land purchases at the cultural and community services committee when these submissions and the city planner’s report on zoning implications were available.
