Les Cabarets
A new entertainment group, Les Cabarets, has been formed in Christchurch. Building on the success of "An Evening with Irving Berlin,” staged last May to celebrate the composer’s one hundredth birthday, the group decided to specialise in Broadway hits from the 1930 s to the present day. “It was a way of keeping together the successful singing talents of the singers,” says the musical director and producer, Anthony Kingston.
As well as 10 singers, the group includes a pianist/musical arranger, a choreographer and a wardrobe manager. The group is designing its own costumes and sets, using the fans, feathers and hats favoured by the Broadway stars. Les Cabarets aims to combine the razzle dazzle and glamour of shows such as “Hello Dolly,” and “New York, New York” with the sheer elegance of the Astaire era, Kingston says.
The group’s first public performance will be on Sunday at the State Trinity Centre at 2.30 p.m.
