Repertory celebrates jubilee
To celebrate the start of their diamond jubilee year, the Canterbury Repertory Theatre Society is presenting Benn Levy’s send-up of the Greek myths, “The Rape of the Belt.” Hercules was sent to
the Amazons for his ninth labour, to capture their coveted belt. In Levy’s play, he takes Theseus with him, and both find the Amazons more feminine than warlike, with hilarious results. The production, which
opens on Saturday, is directed by Penny Giddens. The cast includes Eva Joel, Sue Brown, Cynthia Ward, Peter Giddens, Paul Harrington, Gregory Smith, Sylvia Buckland, Suzie Close, Liane Duncan and Sandra Murray. The season runs until Decem-
ber 3 (except on Sunday), with a matinee on December 3 at 2 p.m. Repertory is the first theatre organisation in Christchurch to reach a diamond jubilee. The celebrations will continue until November
next year, with a masked ball, a garden party and productions of “Death of a Salesman” by Arthur Miller, “Pack of Lies” by Hugh Whitemore, “Scarlet Pimpernel,” based on the story by Baroness Orczy, and “The Winslow Boy” by Terence Rattigan.
