Rest homes

Sir,—l recently attended the public meeting held on the closing of Jubilee Hospital. I did not then have the opportunity to defend the criticism of the standard of rest-home care relating to the placement of the residents of Jubilee Hospital. As manageress of a home that cares for the elderly, and knowing the input and standards we achieve, I advise those who degraded the care given by the majority of people working in this area to visit and see for themselves what is available. The facts that were presented may have been so many years ago. Now the regulations of the Department of Health are such that 24-hour care is are to be no more than two people residing in

a room of standard, set size, and there are now requirements regarding ownership or staff training in the care of elderly people. A number of homes are also owned or run by registered nurses well qualified in this field. Degrading generalisation can be hurtful, unrealistic and dangerous in all areas of living. My philosophy is: Think, and know what you are talking about before passing judgment.—Yours, etc. MARGARET BELL. November 19, 1988.
