Kaikoura’s charms
Kaikoura Walks and Climbs. By Barry Dun nett. Nikau Press, P.O. Box 602. Nelson, 1988. 57 pp. $13.95. Kaikoura deserves better than to be treated only as a place to stop briefly when heading north from Christchurch. The town is a centre for walks, tramps, and climbs that take in some of the most dramatic coastal and mountain regions in the South Island. This well-organised little book combines information about the past with details of walks and climbs that vary from the short-and-easy to the very difficult. It has good maps, adequate illustrations, and sensible advice on times and distances. The author includes just enough information about the geology and vegetation to whet the appetite for more. Or better still, to encourage readers to go and see for themselves.
