Actress not keen on soaps

By JULIE FITZGERALD NZPA London “East Enders star Judith Jacobs, who plays dogooder Carmel Roberts in the popular British series, says she cannot understnd why people become addicted to watching soap operas. “That passion to watch things I find amazing — to actually dash home to watch things on television. I don’t understand that.” “East Enders is so popular in Britain that the studio in north London where the series is filmed is almost fortress-like in its security arrangments. A sign asks fans to please go away and send a selfaddressed envelope for autographs. Jacobs is a lot more punchy that the work aholic Carmel, who she calls “nice, but very middle-of-the-road.” She says she would have .had her criminal screen brother Darren “out of the door and let him sort it out.” She calls “East Enders “good drama” but points out that it is not reality. Jacobs says the programme has too high a proportion of white characters for it to be like the real East End of London.
